Head Coach: Jeff Traylor is entering his 6th season as the head coach of the Roadrunners with a 46-20 record. He’s been dedicated to building this program into a power in the AAC. He has 2 CUSA championships and 2 bowl wins to his record already but it feels like he’s on the verge of taking this program another step forward.
Program Outlook: UTSA is in the unique position of being the biggest football event around in a major market. There’s no NFL teams in San Antonio, and hardly any pro teams in general. As they keep winning they continue to build popularity in the area and their potential is immense. Traylor came along and brought a winning culture to the program, it feels like within the next few years we’ll see this program crash the playoff but we need to back up a few steps. The first key is becoming a top contender in the American, is this the year they can win it?
How does the 2025 Roster look?: UTSA ranks 40th in the country returning 60.5% of their production per Punt and Rally’s returning production rankings. This is a huge change of events, the Roadrunners had a lot of roster overturn last year and it led to a lot of early struggles. Their offense will be led by QB Owen McCown, he had the unenviable task of replacing UTSA legend Frank Harris, it proved to be a challenge early on but he and this offense got hot late. Helping this pass game click will be 5 of their 6 top receivers returning from last year. They also return a lot of starts back on the Oline this year which can only help. The Roadrunners see less experience back on the defensive side of the ball they do get LBs Owen Pewee, and Vic Shaw back but they will rely heavily on transfers to help fill the voids. The Roadrunners should remain good against the run but the question mark with the defense will be improvement against the pass. On offense they will need to work on the ground game, it was only ok last year and taking it a step up would go a long way.

2025 Schedule Thoughts: UTSA’s schedule is a good mix of challenging and winnable. They have an extremely fun non-conference schedule. UTSA faces in-state foe Texas A&M, and then the I-35 Rivalry against Texas State in a critical game for both teams. UTSA plays an awesome in-city FCS foe when they face Incarnate Word, fun fact Incarnate Word is actually closer to the Alamodome than UTSA is. The Roadrunners can’t overlook UIW, they are projected to be top 10 FCS team despite losing their OC and some key players in recent months. The non-conference schedule wraps up with a test at Colorado State. UTSA’s AAC schedule includes 5 games against fellow contenders and 3 rebuilding programs. Perhaps most importantly UTSA gets Tulane and Army at home.
Final Thoughts: UTSA is the AAC contender that’s not being talked about enough. They have great continuity on the coaching staff, and have an explosive offense that will score on anyone. The defense needs to jell, and that’s the key to whether this is just a good 8 or so win season or a conference championship one.
